Originating from the Cham word "Da Nak", meaning "Opening of Big River", Da Nang is a major port city (Vietnam's fourth largest) located to the South Central Coast of Vietnam, on the coast of the South China Sea. It is 764 km south of Ha Noi and 964 km north of Ho Chi Minh City.

In 1847, Da nang was invaded by French vessels in response to persecution of Roman Catholic missionaries. Under the direction of Napolean III, French troops landed in August 1858 and began colonial occupation, later renaming the city "Tourane" in French. The city was used as a major American air abse during the Vietnam War. On January 1, 1997, Da Nang was seperated from Quảng Nam province, becoming the fourth municipality of Vietnam. It now has over 1 million habitants in population, mostly consisting of refugees.

Many remnants were left over from the war in Da Nang, and tourists often give it a pass for Ha Noi's more atospheric environment. Amongst some of the friendliest people around, some of the most beautiful beaches in Vietnam can be found right here.

Da Nang does not indulge itself in the hustle-bustle of Ho Chi Minh City nor the atmosphere of Hanoi, but it does has it's fair share of sights around the city. It can be most closely compared to the charms of Hoi An and the imperial capital of Hue.
