Cambodia Travel Guide

A land of forgotten majesty, Cambodia is a country which has only in recent years begun to emerge as a culturally and historically significant spot on the map for travelers. Tragically, the events of the past few hundred years have given the country a reputation which has overshadowed the beauty and legacy handed down over the many centuries. Forgotten temples, lush rain forests, pristine beaches, exotic cuisine, and friendly people, Cambodia is a traveler’s paradise that is one of the best places to go for a relatively untouched countryside. 

The highest point in Cambodia is Phnum Aoral, at 1,810 meters (5,938 feet). The lowest point is the Gulf of Thailand coast, at sea level.

Arguably the most famous and magnificent of the destinations within Cambodia is the Angkor Archaeological Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The park itself has no accommodations or facilities, and visitors will need to arrange for a stay in the nearby town of Siem Reap, but the 400 square kilometers of forest and ruins contains the ruins of one of the most magnificent cities that have ever been built on the face of the earth. Rivaling the beauty and majesty of the Aztec and Incan ruins of South America, the empire of Khmer left behind some of the most amazing structures to have ever been built by man. 

Beyond that, however, is the resort town of Kep, a seaside destination that is arguably one of the most prestigious within the country. Phnom Penh, the capital city, sits on the confluence of two rivers, and while it has a reputation for being a bit of a rough town for Westerners, and is considered extremely poor by most standards, it is absolutely the best place to start out if experiencing Cambodian culture is on your agenda. 

Cambodia has a great many treasure to offer to the world, and it is unfortunate that its history has been so troubled, and so much blood has been spilt on its soil. But as we move into the 21st century this is absolutely one of the most epic adventure a traveler can make which should never be missed.
