Udaipur, sometimes referred to as The City of Lakes, is a popular tourist destination in Rajasthan. Historically, it was once the capital of the Rajput kingdom of Mewar and the city's main attractions are its splendid Raj-era palaces.

The most famous palace in Udaipur is the Lake Palace which takes up the entire island of Jag Niwas in Lake Pichola. Once the royal summer palace, it is presently a luxury hotel operated by the Taj Hotels and Resorts Palaces. The Lake Palace gained international fame when it was filmed in the James Bond movie Octopussy and was depicted as the title character's home base. Because of this, many tourists restaurants play this movie in the evenings over dinner.

The town city itself is full of guesthouses, restaurants and various shops catering to the tourist crowd. Tailor shops, shoemakers and handicraft shops featuring hand-bound leather books can be found at every turn. With its narrow alley ways and winding streets, the city boasts an old world charm. Stunning views of the lakes and palaces can be had atop any of the numerous rooftop restaurants and is a pleasant place to watch the sun set over the city. 

Udaipur is well connected to the rest of India as it sits halfway between Delhi and Mumbai. There is a train station located away from the city center where it is easy to hire a rickshaw driver to take you into town. Maharana Pratap Airport is about 22km from Udaipur near Dabok.
